How to Help the Connecticut Community After This School Tragedy
There are many emotions, thoughts and frustrations that everyone goes through on a day that started out so normal. I’m not sure I’ve ever been so happy to pick up my kids from school and bring them home with me. My kids are 8 and 11 and we are a very open family. They’ve heard about the tragedy in Connecticut and we’ve discussed it as a family. We use this time to hold them tight, reassure them and try to understand the incomprehensible.
While we are not near the community effected there are still ways to support them. There are a few places that have already set up donation information.
Newton Youth and Family Services: Website says, “ANY DONATIONS MADE TO NEWTOWN YOUTH AND FAMILY SERVICES WILL BE DONATED DIRECTLY TO THOSE EFFECTED BY THE SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SHOOTING”
The American Red Cross: Has supplied blood, platelets and plasma to a nearby hospital where victims were taken. They have also supplies water and food for first repsonders and emotional support for the community at reception center set up for friends and family. As always, donations can be made to the Red Cross to help support their efforts.
I’ll update this post as more information is received.
Beyond monetary donations, please keep the community in your thoughts and prayers. Be mindful of how your children and people around you are reacting and offer them emotional support.
