Price Shopping Importance

by Karen on April 10, 2009

I cannot stress enough how important it is to shop and know prices for items. How can you know you are getting a good deal if you only go by what the stores claims is a sale? When I first started price comparisons for items we use daily, I started an excel sheet and added it to my coupon binder. I write down the cost/size of these items by store and compare them. The old me, rarely looked at prices and I bought what was convenient. It drove my husband crazy and he’d typically ask me, “How much was that?” and I’d have to pull out the receipt! Here are some examples of things to watch out for:

Going out of business

Have you ever been enticed to go into a store because they are advertising “Going out of business” deals, and prices slashed? Recently, the Circuit City down the street from us went out of business. My husband is tech savy and knows his prices on electronics. It was obvious to us that prices had been raised, only to mark them down and claim to be a great deal. Here is a link my friend Shannon sent me, from Good Morning America, explaining this very thing. Watch the video and you’ll be amazed.

Warehouse Clubs

We have been members of several different warehouse clubs over the years. Now I’ll admit there are some good deals to be had there, but you have to do your homework. When my husband starting using a new razor, I priced the blade refills at my local Sam’s Club. I was shocked by the outrageous price. I can get a brand new razor for free or super cheap, just by working the deals at Walgreens or CVS. We now have a growing stockpile of these, at a lower cost than buying the refills. I do try to go to warehouse clubs to stock up on meat, as it is usually cheaper per pound. Unless, you can get a deal like the one I got at Target. And if you’re like me, it’s hard not to pick up other things while I’m in there. I could easily spend over $200 while I’m there. Before joining a warehouse club you should ask them about their coupon policy. Some do not accept coupons at all, others accept only their coupons, while others will accept their coupons, as well as manufacturer coupons. Here is information that I have found from the three warehouse clubs in my city.

Bj’s coupon policy

Sam’s Club – Does not accept coupons

Costco – Accepts Costco coupons, but no manufacturer coupons. Remember, you need to save as much or more than you paid for the membership, or it’s not a deal.

Also, remember that Publix takes competitor coupons so you may be able to use warehouse coupons there. Always ask customers service at your store.

Store brand vs. name brand

I have brand loyalty for some items, but generally I buy what I can get the best price on. I have to purchase Gain laundry detergent because I know my family will not have an allergic reaction to it. On the other hand, I know that it doesn’t matter what type of cheese I buy. Manufacturers offer coupons to get you to buy their products. Match these with a store sales and store coupons and they can become great deals. Store brand items can still be the best deal and should never be overlooked. Look at what Publix is doing to get you to try their name brand items.
