Let’s say you’re in the costume section at Target and your DD5 is jumping for joy over the Snow White costume she just has to have? Being the price shopper I am, I noticed it was NOT on sale. My daughter took it to the scanner and asked, “Is it on sale mommy?” Which actually means is is FOR sale, to a 5 year old. Little does she know that everything in Target is FOR sale! The entire time I’m wondering if it might be cheaper elsewhere. That’s when my iPhone application RedLaser came into play.
This application uses the camera on your iphone or itouch and takes a picture/scans the barcode. Simply line up the barcode in between the arrows and hold still while it scans.
Then it searches the web for price comparisons. The costume in Target was $29.99. Here is the information it spit out when I scanned the costume.
I’m not sure why it did not pull up the Amazon price, as it has for other items. My only thought is that Amazon does not carry this specific barcoded item. Obviously this only searches the web and cannot tell you how much the item would be at the store down the street. But most stores now have websites, where the prices are consistent with the in-store price. It was nice to be able to scan clearance items too see if they were cheaper elsewhere. Most stores price match now as well, including Target. My next goal is to see if they will price match the results to this application. I’m sure they would call the store to verify. I’ll let you know when I try it! When we first downloaded this application, hubby and I ran around the house scanning things. Yeah, we’re geeks! But we’re the saving money kind! This application is $1.99 in the itunes store, but well worth the money after the first scan clearly saved me $10, and made my daughter very happy……Priceless!
