Mt. Dora ~ Girls Weekend and Home Decor

by Karen on June 22, 2009

When we bought this house, I wanted to decorate it with memories, not just lots of stuff you can buy at the store that doesn’t have a story to tell. This method could take years!

My Mom, sister, Aunt and I head to Mt. Dora, Florida every February for Renningers Annual Antique Extravaganza.  There are just rows and rows of vendors with antiques, refabs and junk, just waiting for someone to take them home and make them special. The best part is that no price is set in stone.  Negotiate away!  I’ve heard the best way to do this is to just ask the vendor what’s the best price they’ll do on an item.  I’m not great at this, but I’m getting better!  Do you have a strategy?

This is the photo frame I bought in Mt. Dora 2 years ago.   I bought it from a man who made it out of an old window shutter.  The colors were perfect for my guest room and bathroom.  I finally got around to painting the guest room and was able to hang this.  It has 3 8×10 black and white pictures in it.

1) The first one is of an old Oak tree in White point gardens Park in Charleston, SC.  This is next to Rainbow row.   Hubby and I went there for a nice weekend without kids.

2)  This is a photo of a tree in Anastasia Island Park, FL.  The tree is growing sideways because of the direction the wind has been blowing off the water.  We camped at Anastasia over the summer.

3) A photo of Looking Glass Falls in North Carolina.  This is the trip we took to Piscah National Forest in August 08′.

All of these photos are from places we’ve been and spark memories every time I see them.

This year I had planned to go back and buy some smaller frames from the same guy, to put in the bathroom.  However he was not there this year.  I spotted these shelves soon after we started out on our Sunday shopping.  I thought the price was a little high so I moved on and continued to look. I went back on the way out and she dropped the price for me.  I came home gave them some love, ie: a coat of paint, and here you go.  I hung them in the bathroom with some nice lotions and soaps.  They are so cute, I LOVE them!  The year before I purchased these antique glass door stoppers.  I think that’s what they were, but glass probably isn’t the best thing for that?  Anyway, I hung them on the wall in the bathroom to hang towels on.
