January Savings Update

by Karen on January 31, 2010

How many of you are using the Excel Savings Worksheet I uploaded at the beginning of the year?  It’s not too late to get started because it’s broken down by month.  I’m ready to share my totals.  It would have been significantly better if I hadn’t bought a mattress, but at least I saved $40 with the Big Lots coupon.  I also did not account for the money we saved from the Eating From the Pantry Challenge this month.  We only spent $137.81 on groceries this month and $53.43 of that was today!  We did hit Domino’s – 2 days in a row!  What can I say, we can feed a family of four pizza for under $10.  It was REALLY good, I won’t lie.

We saved $338.13 or 51.3% (not including food savings)

How did you do this month?  Leave a comment if you’d like to share your success or failures – actual numbers not required :)

I did have to shop this month for groceries but we did make it without going out to eat and really that was my main goal. We are all impressed with ourselves. I think it will make when we do go out even that more special. This challenge will allow for changes in our home and for that I am extremely happy!

Now for our next challenge!

Congrats on not eating out. I suppose I could make that a challenge one month. Money Saving Mom is hosting a Freezer cooking day. Where you spend a whole day making several meals to put in the freezer. Then, just pull it out when you are ready to eat it. I might do this next month.

My frame of mind is almost always thinking ahead. In terms of whole meals in the freezer I don’t do that as much as prep work. It’s a grand thought though. I do have a whole pan of Pasta bake in there that I made earlier in the month and made 2 on purpose. I almost have enough little frozen leftover veggies and things to put together a Beef Veggie Soup. My oldest has been begging me for it. He likes it a lot.

How many meals do you think you would try to prep and freeze in one day? I cook and freeze ground beef in dinner portion sizes for quick meals. Cuts time greatly!
