Update: I posted about this a few months ago but wanted to send out a reminder.  I renewed my registration today online at the Florida Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles. I renewed my tag for 2 years at a cost of $72.00.  If I had waited until after September 1st, it would have cost me $114.00.  That’s a savings of $42.00 and I won’t have to worry about it next year!  I hope if you are able to take advantage of this, you will do it asap.  Happy Saving!

Florida tag

On September 1st, the price to renew a Florida car tag will cost more due to an increase approved by the Legislature. You can read more about this in an article in the Florida Times Union. The current fee for a four door sedan is $46.80 but after September 1st, it will be $71.85. The good news is that there is a state provision allowing people to renew their tags up to 3 months before it expires. What does this mean? My birthday is in September, so instead of waiting, I’ll be renewing in August to avoid the $25+ increase. If you’re birthday lands in September, October or November, then you need to renew before the increase on September 1st. The bad news? If your birthday is in December or after, you’ll have to pay the new price. We’ll be saving the family money once, but hubby’s birthday is in December, so we miss out on that one. Mark it on your calendar and get it done! Procrastination will cost you.

You’ll also want to check the expiration date on your drivers license and look into renewing that before September 1st as well. The renewal will extend your license by 8 years.
