This week, there was a 64-year old woman who almost had her purse stole in a local grocery store parking lot.  Channel 4 posted a few tips to help you stay safe, including using the child safety strap on the grocery cart, and lock your purse handles in it.   Unfortunately, this poor woman was loading her groceries when the thug tried to rip her purse right off her shoulder.

I thought this might also be a good time to mention that you should do this with your coupon binder as well.   I’ve heard of many people who have had their coupon binders taken right off their grocery carts, while shopping!  My coupon binder in the picture above is not opened up like it usually is, but it’s still just as vulnerable.  Take the child safety strap and loop it though your binder handles, or a d-ring.   If anyone tries to grab it you’ll know and they will get a grocery cart with it.

Whenever possible, alway have your cart in front of you in the store.  Never turn your back on it.

One of the joys of Motherhood is being woken at midnight and told there is some kind of ‘beetle’ in the kitchen {insert sarcasm}.  Only to realize it’s a ROACH!  I pride myself on adding to my SAHM resume, including exterminator 24/7.   I saved my 12 year old son from walking into a spider web yesterday too!  :)

If you live in Florida, you are probably familiar with the dreaded cockroach.  I despise them so much I had to use a drawing for this post instead of a REAL picture!   Apparently we’ve been fortunate enough to avoid them coming in the house thus far, since my kids don’t even know what they are called.  Which is good because when I was a kid they’d invade my room in the middle of the night. We lived in a highly wooded area where they dwell.  Heavy rains can also cause them to look for dry shelter.

Today I’m calling the exterminators to come help us out and I thought I’d share a few tips on how to save money on home pest extermination.

1. Do it yourself  - This goes without saying.  You can either take care of them individually as I did yesterday, or take further action for a bigger problem.  It’s good to do an examination of your home and seal up any cracks or crevices that bugs maybe using to gain access to your home.   If you decide to use chemicals or homemade deterrents  be sure to research it first.  Especially if you have kids or pets.  I have heard that the home improvement stores only carry the low grade stuff.  If you want the professional spays, try Amazon.  The type of DIY you do, will also depend on the type of pest you are having a problem with.

2. Ask friends and neighbors – Many companies will give both the customer and referrer a bonus or discount for referring the company.   We referred our neighbor to the yard fertilizer company we used.  They had recently moved in and asked us how we got our lawn to look so good.

3. Pay up front – Some companies want to secure your business and will give you a % off for paying for a years worth of service up front.

4. Pay as needed – Depending on your area, and you may need to live there a while to determine the frequency of your pest issues, you can use pest control on an as needed basis.   We have been in our current home for 7 years and I know that the rainy season is when we have the most issues.  So instead of paying monthly for the entire year, I opt for the 3 month service, during that season.

5. Avoid escalation – Pests attract other pests and if you don’t take care of a small problem, it could get bigger.  Save money now by taking care of a small problem.  This is especially the case with termites who can destroy the structure of your home.   One year we had a skink take residence in our garage.  We had a roach problem in the garage and it was his food source.  I didn’t mind this natural food chain method of pest control.  As long as the skink stayed out of my way!

6. Get a Cat – No seriously they love to hunt and will spend hours investigating a bug.   Of course this is my shameless plug to adopt a pet.

Do you cut your kids hair?  I did both of my kids first hair cuts, because let’s face it, it was easy back then.  Now my daughters hair is really thick and my son is very picky.  But I do not have hair cutting experience.  If my son would agree to have his hair buzzed for the summer, no sweat, I can do that.  In fact that’s what Daddy does.   Last trip to the hair salon for the kids we paid half price because they had special going on.  Well my son was not pleased.  He wants his hair long, I’m choosing my battles here!  Then my daughters bob cut was all uneven and I had to cut off long pieces that were apparently missed.   So after chatting with my friends yesterday, Ann at Coupon Deals and More said she had a guest post on cutting bangs by Tiffany at My Litter.  You might recognize Tiffany, as she was on last weeks episode of Extreme Couponing.  I watched the video and thought, I can do that!  So after school I took my daughter out on the patio and wet down her hair, sprayed some detangler on it and started to comb through it.  My intent was to do a video for you all!  Then I started noticing these white flakes on the comb.  I started examining her scalp, all the while going in to a slight panic….”tell me this ISN’T lice!”    Now I have been fortunate thus far and avoided the whole lice thing with my kids, so I have no idea what it looks like!  AND my daughter has a fear of bugs, so last thing I wanted to do was alarm her and cause panic.  Did I mention my in laws are due to arrive today for a visit?  All of this is going through my mind as I proceed to examine her.  So I called my mom. Isn’t that what all moms do in these situations?   All the while, trying not to scratch my scalp, that is now itching!  (Purely subconscious, I’m sure)  :) The “objects” were only on the crown of her head, not along the neck line, or ears.  She had not been complaining about itching either.  I did not notice any crawling objects during my exam.  Long story short, my daughter said someone threw sand at her at school, so I threw her in the shower and washed her hair twice!  White objects are now gone…..crisis averted!

So I’m sorry I do not have video for you all.  My friend Ann said it probably would have gone viral, purely for the entertainment value!

Since I don’t have video of the cuts, I’ll share my recipe for homemade detangler.  My daughter has super thick hair and a sensitive scalp.  So brushing her hair can be a nightmare.  I’ve purchase the brand name detangler at the store, but those can be expensive.

Here’s what you’ll need:

• 1 Empty Spray bottle
• Water
• Conditioner (Check for printable coupons first)

Fill a spray bottle 1/2 way with water and fill the rest with conditioner.  Mix thoroughly and viola, you have homemade detangler.  The best part is you should have all this on hand.  You can even cheat and use the old brand name detangler bottle!

We’ve all heard of Retail Therapy and probably have even used the phrase many times.  The idea of shopping to increase or improve your mood.  I know I’ve called my Mom and Sister to invite them to do some retail therapy with me.  But what if you could improve your mood simply by thinking of purchasing items without actually buying them?

A recent study, shows that people who think about buying items are actually happier than people who think about buying them and actually follow through with the purchase.   The state of anticipating or desiring a product maybe more pleasurable than the product ownership itself.  The study showed that people who buy the product, have a drop in pleasure after doing so.

So next time you need some retail therapy, go have fun, browse around, put stuff in your cart, but don’t follow through and see how you feel.  I know I’ve gone out shopping before picked up items and ended up putting them back.  Felt good to browse around but then I’d realize I didn’t really NEED them.
