Eating From the Pantry challenge – Update Week 1

by Karen on January 4, 2010

I thought I’d post an update on our Eating from the Pantry challenge. It’s week 1 and I’m getting a lot of slack from the Hubby.  We’re trying to get back on our healthy eating track as well.  I just have to ‘remind’ him what we currently have that he can eat. Yogurt, salad, turkey sandwiches etc.  Last night he got inventive and dipped his carrots and broccoli in the garlic & herb cheese dip we bought BOGO in December.  My kids are very picky eaters.  One week they devour a block of cheese, the next week they claim they don’t like that cheese anymore!  After having our family meeting where I explained the plan to them, they’ve stepped up to the plate.  They have actually responded better than I’d hoped.  It’s kind of a super mission for them.  I tell them “we are having such and such for lunch today because we’re cleaning out remember?”   I also tell them we aren’t wasting any food.  If they don’t eat, there will be no afternoon snacks or dessert.  Now this may sound cruel.  I swear I’m not feeding them a pound of liver for lunch.   Grilled cheese, apples with peanut butter.  Sounds yummy to me!  Oh there was one night when I fed them pork (which they hate) and I told them it was chicken.  They ate it without question.  They are 8 and 5 and I’m sure they won’t be scarred for life.  As for me, I’ve had to resort to the coffee creamers that we bought to try, and they didn’t make our favorites list.  So instead of giving them away or throwing out, I’m sucking it up and using them.  Coffee is my one indulgence that I’m not giving up.  I take the kids to school, sip on my coffee and search for the deals for you guys.  It’s MY time.  How’s our challenge going?

Sounds like things are going well for your family! Good deal :)

We are doing the same here. My only resistance is my 9 yr old. Lots of whining from him. We are cutting out eating out, take out, & buying outside of necessities completely for the whole month. I know we are only a few days in but I am beyond pleased with myself so far and my family. We have all had a hand in the dinner making each night. This challenge is the best thing for my household in more ways than just the obvious. My only personal challenge in all this is time management.

I am still working on in my mind what the reward will be in the end for the 4 of us when we make it. I have many ideas running through my head but none of them are screaming to be the prize yet.

My husband is worried we will be completely depleted soon and we’ll have to pay full price for items to re-stock. So I will still be looking for deals on basics so this doesn’t happen. But we have tons of canned goods and such that we need to eat. Glad you’re doing it with me Jen! Hang in there, my 8 year old/almost 9 is ok so far because we haven’t run out of his waffles yet! Last night I made a quiche from scratch, crust and everything! Very proud of myself. The family devoured it.
