My husband decided he wanted a Stylus for his iPad, to test handwriting applications. He watched several online videos of folks creating one out of household objects. This was after he looked at Best Buy and Amazon online. They are around $6 online but he thought he’d try a handmade one first. Because he (a boy at heart) likes to take things apart, and I am better at putting things back together, we teamed up on this one. He originally tried the aluminum foil wrapped around a pen with magic tape on the end. Project FAIL! Then we tried the sponge method. The sponge worked! Now it was just a matter of creating a device that would work and was functional. We went through our pen supply and found a BIC pen that just might do the job. The key is to have the sponge in the tip of the pen, but your finger has to also touch the sponge. So in I came with my drill bits! We took the pen apart and gutted it! Then I drilled a hole through the plastic, at about the point your fingers would naturally rest when writing. Don’t mind me in my “work area” in my PJ’s!
So now you have the tip of a pen case with a hole in it. The next step is to cut the sponge and insert into the tip and the hole that you drilled. Next, trim the tip.
Then put the pen back together, minus the ink of course! And viola, you have a homemade stylus!
Of course this probably only saved us $6, but it was a fun project. BUT WAIT….If you need a Scott Brite sponge coupon, this one for $1.00 off and it’s printable, good till 6/30/10.
Here’s a video, just to show you it works.
