Over the years I’ve learned more and more about the products we use on a daily basis and the effect they can have on our bodies. I’ve been more conscious about things I put in my body and on my skin. I was surprised to learn that there are minimal regulations on the personal care industry. Companies are allowed to use known toxins—ingredients that have been linked to cancer, reproductive issues, and hormone disruption—without even disclosing these ingredients to us. So when my daughter started expressing an interest in make up (lip gloss etc) I started doing more research. I always assumed the cosmetics I bought over the course of my life were safe.
On my hunt for safer products for myself and my daughter, I came across BeautyCounter.
This was shocking to me!
Now look how many are banned in the US!
And only about 10% of the 10,000 chemicals commonly found in personal care products have safety data.
Researchers at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health published a study in 2013 that detected lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other metals in many popular brands of lipsticks and lip glosses commonly found in drugstores and department stores.
The study also noted that children are especially susceptible to heavy metal accumulation and should not play with make up. Think of all the young girls that apply make-up daily or even multiple times a day?
Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues (including, but not limited to asthma, learning disabilities, cancer and infertility) are on the rise, and due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals—whether it’s in the shower, on our commute, while we eat lunch at a local restaurant, or when we clean our kitchens at home.
What’s worse is the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics) allows companies to use chemicals known to be extremely harmful (lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates) in the products we put on our bodies and on our kids every single day, day after day.
We deserve better and our children deserve better. That’s why I’ve partnered with Beautycounter!
At Beautycounter, we’ve banned more than 1,500 ingredients setting a new health and safety standard.
Every single Beautycounter product is rated between 0-2 on EWG’s Skindeep database, which is my go-to resource for researching product safety!
I used to walk into a store or department store and get overwhelmed by all the options and choices. Not only did I wonder what would work for me, but now I had to concern myself with what is SAFE? Not anymore. I’ve been using BeautyCounter tint foundation, concealer, charcoal soap, charcoal face mask, eyeshadows, lip sheer, lip gloss, mascara, cream blusher and more. I gave my daughter lip gloss and mascara and she loves them. We did the charcoal face mask together and love it. We are still trying to get the boys to give it a try. Why not right? Boys need to take care of their skin too!
